The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has charged two people from Pakistan with Citizenship Act offences after they allegedly provided false residency information on their application for Canadian Citizenship.
The investigation stems from a referral that the RCMP received from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). The ensuing investigation led members of the RCMP to believe that Mr. Mukesh Kumar Maheshwari, 37 years old, and Ms. Usha Bai, 33 years old, used an ‘address of convenience’ on their Canadian Citizenship Applications in an attempt to mislead CIC into believing that they met the residency requirements for Canadian Citizenship.
Mr. Maheshwari and Ms. Bai have been charged under section 29(2)(a) of the Citizenship Act. They both appeared in Ontario Provincial Court on December 14th , 2011 and are currently held in custody pending their second appearance in Brampton Provincial Court on Friday December 16, 2011 at 9:30 a.m.
“This case is an excellent example of how government agencies are working together to prevent people from illegally obtaining Canadian Citizenship” said Cst. Nicole Simpson of the RCMP’s GTA Immigration and Passport section.
