Over a dozen grain cars went off the rails roughly halfway across a bridge over a valley on its way from Winnipeg to Edmonton at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, near Wainwright, Alta.

According to CN spokesperson Julie Senecal, the train carrying grain was heading west from Winnipeg to Edmonton.

“It’s too early at this stage to say when the line will be reopened to traffic,” she said.

Reportedly, 31 cars went off the tracks roughly 30 kilometres from Wainwright near the community of Fabyan, and 17 plunged off the bridge.

Senecal said: “There were no injuries and there are no environmental issues.”

The cause of derailment is still under investigation. At the moment, CN is diverting traffic to a line further north.

Senecal said: “You have one car that falls, and very soon you have another, but pretty soon the coupler is going to break.”

On Friday, a northbound train carrying 18 cars wrecked just outside of Hay Lakes. No serious injuries and environmental impact were reported, Senecal said.

Moreover, last Tuesday, a freight train with almost a dozen coal cars crashed into a stationary train 55 kilometres north of Hinton.
