Muhammad Shafia and his accomplices decided to kill four of Shafia women who did not abide by the conservative cultural code of modesty and obedience, jurors were informed during the trial.

Crown lawyer Laurie Lacelle explained the theory behind a complex murder conspiracy while completing her closing address to jurors. All three alleged murderers have pleaded not guilty to four counts of first-degree murder.

Lecelle said: “The evidence is that Shafia, Tooba and Hamed had decided that there was a diseased limb on their family tree. Their decision was to remove the diseased limb in its entirety and trim the tree back to the good wood.”

Deliberations began at 10 a.m. ET, a day after the trial judge finished giving his instructions to the jurors.

Zainab, 19, Sahar, 17, and Geeti, 13, and Shafia’s first wife were drowned to death. However, examinations could not identify where or how they were drowned.

“Mohammad Shafia killed his daughters and Rona and he felt entitled to do so in order to protect his family honour,” Lacelle said, referring jurors to secret police wiretap recordings on which Shafia was heard cursing his dead daughters.

The Shafia family basically belongs to Afghanistan. They came to Canada in 2007.

  1. Judiciary has become such a place where one can make the Truth untrue and the false a truth. This depends on the skill of the lawyers. The able man wins while the other fails. If this were purposely done, this man should be drowned 4 times before he finally butchered to death.A murder to murder is justifiable though lawyers try to make money hcomment_IDing the truth. After all, eventually,it was the truth which will emerge sooner or later.
