Democrat Peter Julian says NDP is all set to fight the government on pensions and related issues in the coming days. According to Julian, the seniors in his riding recently told him they’d never vote Conservatives again if they slash retirement income.

He said: “For the Conservatives to say, ‘we just don’t care about public opinion for the next few years,’ I think would be a primary mistake. I don’t think they’re that stupid. Our job is to make sure that Canadians are aware that their points of view are being represented in the House of Commons.

“We’ll be fighting the Harper Government’s intention to make significant cuts over the next few months.”

In a speech in Davos, Switzerland, PM Harper indicated a few potential changes to Old Age Security benefits.

On Monday, Government House Leader Peter Van Loan said: “All seniors should rest assured those that are collecting OAS today will continue to collect it without any change. Our focus is on the medium- and the long-term and ensuring the sustainability of the system for 10 years, 20 years, and 30 years from now.

“For those who are retired today or approaching retirement, they can rest assured there will be no changes that will affect their benefits.”
