Eleven reported dead in one of the worst accidents in Ontario’s history. On Monday afternoon, a truck crashed into a van carrying 13 migrant workers on a rural road near Hampstead, Ont.
Three of the injured people were rushed to a hospital in Stratford. One of them got more critical injuries and was airlifted to Hamilton. According to EMS workers, the survivors spoke Spanish. The police could not figure out where they were from or where they were headed.
“I’ve been on the job for 28 years and I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Inspector Steve Porter of the local OPP detachment. He said the van was carrying migrant agricultural workers; however, no much is known about the deceased.
“You can imagine it was pretty catastrophic,” said Linda Rockwood, director of the local EMS department. “This is hopefully something you only see once in a lifetime.”
Premier Dalton McGuinty has paid condolences to the families of all those people who suffered through the crash.
McGuinty said: “On behalf of 13 million Ontarians, I want to offer our deepest condolences to those who lost a loved one and to offer our most sincere prayers for those taken to hospital.
“We also thank the first responders who provided compassionate emergency care under very difficult circumstances. I know Ontarians will pull together to support the victims’ family and friends during this difficult time.”
