Commission to release interim report on residential schools

A commission that was formed to facilitate First Nations in recovering from abuses they underwent in residential schools is soon to issue an interim report, says the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) of Canada.

The commission will release the report Friday morning at Simon Fraser University. From 1870s till 1996, at least 150,000 aboriginal students were forced to attend schools. Allegedly, the report encloses 20 recommendations that attend to areas of education, health and commemoration.

According to Justice Murray Sinclair, every province and territory should analyze the core curriculum of its public-school to evaluate the content being taught about the residential schools and to form devise learning material.

The TRC also showed interest in working with the governments to come up with exclusive local campaigns aimed at refining the general public on residential schools.

Sinclair added that wide-ranging awareness efforts are required to ascertain that the remaining Canada completely empathizes with the agony of the children who attended the schools.

Moreover, the commission also recommends setting up mental-health wellness facilities in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories that focus on childhood trauma and conventional curative methods that are gravely looked-for by residential school survivors.

The commission considered around 25,000 statements from survivors, went to 500 communities and talked to roughly 100 former school employees.
