Via Rail Canada is putting all its resources into clearing the area in Burlington, Ont. after a train derailed on Sunday killing three employees.
"There’s no question it’s very tragic," said John Marginson, Via Rail’s chief operating officer. "We’re a relatively small company, we’re a family, and we know everyone by name. We certainly feel for the families of the colleagues that we lost."
The surrounding area is cordoned off. Via Rail’s operations team is still trying to clear the tracks since it is an active rail corridor for all sorts of trains.
Furthermore, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada has launched a thorough investigation to find out the facts behind this incident.
The Transportation Safety Board would primarily be hunting for the black box from the train to learn what exactly caused the incident. In case the board learns about some critical safety issues, it promises to make them public in no time.
"On behalf of Transport Canada, I would like to convey my condolences to the families of those killed in this tragic accident," said Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities.
"We are cooperating fully with the Transportation Safety Board. Transport Canada has appointed a Minister’s observer who will keep me informed of the investigation’s progress. As those that were fatally involved in this accident were VIA employees, Transport Canada will conduct an investigation under the Canada Labour Code, Part II into the circumstances of the incident."
