Teachers of British Columbia are going on a three-day strike from Monday onwards after voting greatly in favor of building up their job action.
The B.C. Teachers’ Federation president Susan Lambert declared the strike on Thursday, after corroborating that the majority of teachers, who voted this week, favored a strike.
Education Minister George Abbott said he expects union members would not engage in a full walkout but would accept negotiations as mentioned in the new legislation.
“If I got a call asking me and my negotiating team to sit down and negotiate a reasonable deal, I would be there in a heartbeat,” said Lambert.
A number of school boards plan on keeping the schools open, notwithstanding the strike. Abbott also said that the government will not put up with another school year being disturbed. Certainly, students and their parents are going to agree with it.
According to a new law introduced by the Labour Relations Board, all the strikes would be considered illegal until Aug. 31. However, the bill will roughly take two weeks to pass into law, which means the strike will only be legal until the legislation is passed.
“Sometimes even when you’re afraid, even when the threat is overwhelming you have to stand up to a bully,” Ms. Lambert said.
