Canada will have back-to-work legislation to end Air Canada strikes geared up by the next week. The government served notice that it will put forward a bill in order to continue the services of a much troublesome airline.

If the federal government intends to bring the bill early next week, it has to be prompt. Air Canada’s 8,600 ground staff including mechanics, baggage handlers and cargo agents is threatening to go on strike beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, March 12.

"We wanted to make sure at least we had something… We know a work stoppage there is going to cause difficulty for the Canadian economy," Raitt said. "You’re going to have a million passengers flying Air Canada in the next 10 days."

On the other hand, the opposition did not waste any time in assessing the steps of its competitors and retort.

"If the government feels Air Canada is an essential service, they have to provide a fair arbitration process," interim Liberal Leader Bob Rae tweeted.

Raitt has invited the Canada Industrial Relations Board to look into the matter. To all intents and purposes, that extracted the risk of a disruption during the key March break travel season because no work strike is officially possible as long as the board is studying the issue.

"Even though we’ve referred it to the CIRB they could come back at any moment with a decision," Raitt said. "Quite frankly, we don’t know whether the CIRB will make their decision on Monday."
