A 34-year-old man has pleaded guilty in Edmundston Provincial Court to four charges in connection with an investigation into access and distribution of child sexual abuse images and text.

On March 28, 2012, Shane Evan McCabe of no fixed address pleaded guilty to four new charges laid by police. Charges of possession of child pornography, making child pornography by printing child sexual abuse images and writing text describing sexual contact with children under the age of 16, distribute and advertise child pornography, and access child pornography replaced seven charges that were originally laid last month.

McCabe has been ordered to undergo a psychological assessment prior to sentencing on May 30, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Edmundston Provincial Court.

The charges were the result of a year long investigation by the Edmundston City Police Force and the New Brunswick RCMP’s Internet Child Exploitation Unit that was prompted when images of child sexual abuse were found scattered around the city of Edmundston.

McCabe was arrested on February 2, 2012 upon his release from jail where he was serving time for failing to register with the National Sex Offender Registry for past convictions.

The Fredericton Police Force, the RCMP’s Technological Crime Unit, the National Child Exploitation Coordination Centre (NCECC), the RCMP’s Violent Crime Linkage Analysis System (VICLAS) and the National Sex Offender Registry also assisted with the investigation.
