Quebec’s anti-corruption squad has finally arrested construction magnate Tony Accurso – allegedly involved in several corruption cases for the last two years. The police started raiding early-morning Tuesday. The squad had search warrants for a number of places in Terrebonne, Mascouche and Laval.

Around 8:30 a.m., the authorities confirmed that Accurso is under police custody. Robert Lafrenière, the head of Quebec’s anti-corruption unit, is soon to hold a press conference to summarize the entire operation, which required at least 100 police officers.

Police was also on the search for Accurso’s partner in crime, Normand Trudel, the owner of Transport et Excavation Mascouche. They both are business associates and close friends.

The Quebec police are working on corruption scandals related to construction industry since 2010. Recently, Premier Jean Charest decided to hold a commission of inquiry into the intricate issue at hand, which is also linked with Quebec’s political party financing.

Since its formation, the Unité permanente anticorruption (UPAC) has arrested a number of famous people, including MNA Tony Tomassi last October on fraud charges, ex-mayor of Outremont and two senior borough officials, plus the ex-mayor of Boisbriand.
