The dismembered and partially eaten body of a man was discovered about 6:00 pm Wednesday evening by hunters walking in a remote forest cut block off the Long Lake Road between Kamloops and Merritt.

The hunters initially called police to report an abandoned 1986 Volkswagen Jetta found about 30 meters off the cut block line. While police were on route, the hunters began searching the immediate area and discovered the body in the surrounding bush, about 120 meters from the vehicle. Indicators at the scene suggested the body had been dragged to that location by an animal. The hunters also reported seeing a bear in the area before they initially found the vehicle.

The vehicle was registered to a 54-year-old man who had been recently residing in Kamloops. Inside the vehicle investigators found apparent drugs and related paraphernalia along with a hockey type duffel bag containing personal items and a bottle of liquor.

The driver’s window of the vehicle was down and investigators noted numerous muddy animal prints and scratches on the car and a dent in the driver’s door just under the window. The weather stripping was hanging off of the driver’s window and the side mirror was bent forward.

While police, the Coroner and BC Conservation were on the scene, a bear returned to the area and was heard in the bush where the body had been found. When investigators returned to recover the body, it had been moved by the bear from the location where it was initially discovered. The remains were later recovered without incident and have been transported to Royal Inland Hospital.

Positive identification of the remains is expected to be confirmed through fingerprint analyses this morning. The vehicle has been towed to the RCMP detachment where it will be examined by Forensic Identification Specialists today.

No name has been released pending positive identification of the body and a notification of next of kin. The circumstances surrounding the man’s death are unusual but investigators have not found any evidence of foul play in connection with the death. The exact cause of death has not been confirmed.
