Durham Regional Police are warning residents about a fraudulent incident that took place in Uxbridge.

Earlier this month a 75-year-old Uxbridge resident was phoned by a male claiming to be her bank manager. He indicated an employee was stealing from savings accounts, including hers and that he needed her help to stop this employee. The victim was asked to withdraw a quantity of cash and bring it to a parking lot where it would be collected by a specified male. The victim also provided some personal information to the suspect male when he asked for it.

On Wednesday June 27, 2012 about 11 a.m., the woman attended the Medical Centre parking lot on Toronto Street in Uxbridge and handed over the cash to an unknown male. She was told that the employee was now going to be fired, so she shouldn’t tell anyone for a few days. The money was never returned to her account and she contacted her bank a few days later to report the incident. Police continue their investigation.

The suspect is described as: male, white, 45-46-years-old, clean shaven with a slender build. He was wearing a navy blue hat.

Residents, particularly seniors, are reminded that banks and other financial institutions do not make these types of enquires by telephone or by email, and that they should be extra careful when giving out personal information.

  1. I feel terrible for the victim. These scammers should be tracked down until they’re all behind jail bars. It’s just unfortunate that in most scam cases, such as the complaints posted at http://www.callercenter.com, the common victims are seniors. Don’t you think these culprits deserve a more severe penalty? 😕
