The Hamilton Police Service Homicide Unit is investigating a suspicious death that occurred at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre on September 12th, 2012.

On Wednesday, September 12th, 2012 just before 8 a.m. a 42 year old inmate was found in his cell unconscious and unresponsive.  Hamilton Police and EMS responded and the male was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Three other patients in the same cell range were taken to the hospital between the evening hours of Tuesday, September 12th and the hours following the finding of the deceased person.  They were experiencing medical distress, but have all since been treated and returned to the Detention Centre.

Due to the concerns about what may have happened to cause the death of the male and whether any connection existed with the illnesses of the other three inmates, the Hamilton Police Homicide Unit took over the investigation into the cause and circumstances of the death.

On Thursday, September 13th, 2012 a post mortem was performed on the male party.  The cause of death will not be released pending toxicology results. The Homicide Unit will continue to investigate the circumstances of this death.  Next of kin has been notified however the victims name will not be released at this time.
