Pointe-Sapin man arrested in hostage taking of a woman

A 59-year-old man from Pointe-Sapin, N.B. has been arrested following an incident in Pointe-Sapin where a woman was taken hostage.

Police were called to a seniors’ residence in Pointe-Sapin at around 7 a.m. on September 17. A man was outside the home carrying a firearm. He had one of the female residents held hostage outside the home. The man and woman are both known to each other.

The RCMP’s Emergency Response Team and RCMP Crisis Negotiation Team were called in and following negotiations with the man, the woman was released unharmed at around 10 a.m. The man threatened to harm himself for the next few hours until just before noon he gave himself up to police and was taken into custody. No one was physically injured.

The investigation is ongoing.
