A psychiatrist who is defending himself from allegations of having sexual relationship with a female patient in a Hamilton, Ont., clinic has recently resigned from his new job as the department chair at the University of Alberta. Claudio Soares had been hired as the chair of university’s psychiatry department starting from September 1, but now his placement has been delayed as he takes leave before he can start the new office.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario is the in charge authority to overlook such cases of professional misconduct of doctors in the province. The investigation is underway and he is charged for professional misconduct. Soares is alleged to have had a sexual relationship with a female patient from November 2007 to May 2009. During this period, Soares was a professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont., while he also handled the office of director of the Women’s Health Concerns Clinic.
The spokeswoman of the University of Alberta, Jo-anne Nugent, stated that she is not at liberty to verify whether the staff has officially hired Soares or when did they get aware of the allegations against him. Ms. Nugent announced that Soares has been placed on leave at the same day that he was to take charge of the office as chair. And on Monday he “resigned effective immediately.”
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario initially issued a hearing notice concerning Soares’s case on July 11. Later on Aug. 7, the College displayed a public notification for the entire country declaring that Dr. Soares is advised not to be left alone with female patients during his sessions. The document particularly pointed out that Soares had failed to fully co-operate with the investigators of the case.
