The case of Toronto’s three African elephants being transferred to California has been delayed even further as zoo officials raise “major concerns” regarding the potential health situation at PAWS. The zoo board has decided that Zoo’s CEO, John Tracogna, will give an official “update” regarding the matter in front of the mayor’s executive council and the city council for consideration.

City council has already decided in the past that the three African elephants, namely AfrToka, Thika and Iringa, are to be sent to PAWS facility in California. Delays have been caused numerously as the implementation has had several hiccups in the past due to different problems such as permits, finding a suitable transport and a crate.

This time a case of active tuberculosis observed in one of the Asian elephants at PAWS has scared the officials off. Senior veterinarian of the Zoo, Dr. Graham Crawshaw stated that he is “not yet satisfied” whether PAWS has good enough quarantine protocols for keeping Toronto’s elephants from contracting the infectious disease. Dr. Crawshaw mentioned that “obviously the TB is a significant issue,” during the meeting of zoo board held on Tuesday.

On the other hand, the city officials are evidently irritated of this issue as it has already taken almost around 11 months to implement the decision. One of the board members, Councillor Josh Colle, shared his worries saying that the elephants can’t be moved in the winter.  He stated that “I really think no one is coming out of this looking good.”
