Irani President at UN General AssemblyDelegates of several countries, including Canada, walked out on the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, before he could approach the podium at the UN General Assembly today. It was not their first time as the Canadian delegation has previously walked out on him last year as well.

Ahmadinejad’s speech today had a long sought vision of a “new world order,” which he envisioned to be free of any “hegemony of arrogance.” Ahmadinejad has a certain reputation for blistering condemnation of the United States and Israel in the past. Today he stated in his speech that the “continued threat by the uncivilized Zionists to resort to military action against our great nation is a clear example of this bitter reality.” He refrained from mentioning anything about the country’s controversial nuclear program.

In background to today’s Canadian Delegates walkout on Iranian President, Canada had already announced last month to cut its diplomatic alliance with Iran. In response the Islamic Republic News Agency released a statement of Iran’s Foreign Ministry advising the Iranian citizens to refrain from visiting Canada. The statement targeted Canada as a country which had “Islamophobia,” “Iranophobia” and a “double-standard” towards human rights.

Numerous world leaders, including Liberal MP Irwin Cotler, attempted to convince UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon to not allow the Iranian President to speak at the UN General Assembly. Cotler communicated through a letter to the secretary general and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, writing that “allowing President Ahmadinejad to address the UN General Assembly is a cruel parody of law and justice that will put us on the wrong side of history.” Cotler claimed that UN should be indicting Ahmadinejad, and not ask him to make a speach.
