It took more than 80 firefighters to control a three-alarm fire at an industrial building in Etobicoke. An emergency call was received on Saturday morning when smoky clouds went up above the North Fish Company Ltd., located at 23 Six Point Rd. near Kipling Ave. and Bloor St. The time was noted to be around 7:20 am.

Captain David Eckerman, the head of Toronto Fire Department, explained the situation describing that his crew was not able to penetrate the building since they had to pull out very soon because of all the heat, flames and smoke. He mentioned that “conditions are just too dangerous to be inside.” He went on describing that the west and north sides of the building had partially fallen down, whereas the southeast part of the building was significantly damaged as well.

Soon after Toronto Fire Department appealed for a Toronto Hydro unit to report at the scene to control the blaze which dangerously approached the overhead electric wires. Eckerman reported saying “we had power lines in danger of falling down upon our vehicles and crew.” Toronto Police, Sgt. Jeff Alderdice, disclosed that as a routine protocol in such situation, the buildings immediately near to the factory were quickly emptied.

It was not until noon that Firefighters ended up taking control of the fire without any causality. Eckerman declared his suspicion that the building might no longer be useful anymore. He said “I believe the building will be a total loss.” He added that “It will probably be knocked down within a couple weeks once the insurance is settled.” The reason of the fire will now be investigated by The Ontario Fire Marshall.
