Veteran Liberal MP Denis Coderre has given robust hints indicating towards his intentions to run for mayor of Montreal in the fall of 2013, though he has promised to serve as a federal politician until his party elects a new leader in the spring of 2013.

Coderre is arranging a rally of almost 1,000 supporters in Montreal on Nov. 9 for celebrating his 15th anniversary as an MP. He did not confirm on whether he has made final conclusion to run for the city’s mayor or not. Although he did clarify on Wednesday that has informed the Liberal colleagues that he does not intend to seek the leadership of the party. He stated that “as you know, it’s no big secret that many people are urging me to run for the mayoralty of Montreal.” Coderre was addressing a joint news conference with interim Liberal leader Bob Rae, where he mentioned that “I’ve said it’s the (Liberal) leadership or the mayoralty (in the future). I’m saying today that it’s not the leadership.”

Coderre went on replying the queries of the media, stating that “I’m not the mayor in waiting or the future mayor in waiting, my job is to be the MP for (the federal riding of) Bourassa.” He added that “I think Montreal deserves better,” and “I’m a Montreal MP and I’ve been a resident of Montreal for the past 40 years. I love Montreal. I adore Montreal, and it’s clear that I find it disappointing to see what’s happening. But we’ll let the (Charbonneau) commission do its work. We’ll let people do what they need to do in their own jurisdiction.”
