Premier Pauline Marois and her Parti Quebecois MNAs celebrated the 25th death anniversary of Rene Levesque by arranging a mediocre ceremony beside his statue out in the lawn of the National Assembly. Marois displayed flowers in front of the statue and everyone observed a moment of silence to respect his honor.

Marois later asserted that she often thinks of Levesque as a role model and is frequently inspired by him as she aims to carry on to live his legacy. Marois showed her regards by saying that “we will continue your work Mr. Levesque. We will clean up the system, we will break corruption.” At the end of the ceremony the PQ government nominated its first bill on Thursday.

This bill has projected a law which will aim to establish a new bureaucratic necessity for the companies intending to do business with the government. The bill, named as Bill 1 for now, will make it compulsory for all companies involving in business terms with the government to avail a ‘certificate of integrity’ from the provincial Financial Markets Authority (AMF), that will approve whether the company has a clean record of corruption or not.

The opposition parties have, up till now, shown support of these anti-corruption procedures in its inaugural speech. Even though the opposition has enough votes in the assembly to outnumber the government, but it analysts claim it will not do so. Opposition parties might use other options even if they are not in favor of the bill, like abstaining from voting, or not being in the chamber during the vote, to make their point symbolically.
