The mayor who kept his seat for 23-year at a city next to Montreal might just be announcing his retirement today, which will end a political career so overriding that his critics referred to him as “The Monarch.”

Laval mayor is being constantly caught up in the province wide corruption scandal because of which he is expected to make an announcement on his political future this afternoon at 2 p.m. Gilles Vaillancourt has been overwhelmingly dominating the city politics competition in municipal elections since 1989. Unconfirmed rumors allege that Vaillancourt is on the verge of resigning from his everlasting post. The official statement from the city office stated that Vaillancourt will be addressing the media with “an update on his situation.”

In case the mayor announces his resignation, the ongoing corruptions scandals will have resulted in making one-quarter of Quebecers temporarily living in cities without a mayor, as Montreal’s Gerald Tremblay resigned last week. 72-years-old Vaillancourt has taken a sick leave from the office since Oct. 24.

On the other hand, the anti-corruption unit of Quebec has kept a tight leash on Laval in the past weeks, several raid parties searched various engineering firms and businesses related to Vaillancourt, along with his residence, condo, offices and bank safety-deposit boxes. Vaillancourt’s name was directly mentioned in the ongoing testimony before Quebec’s Charbonneau inquiry into corruption.

A former construction boss named Lino Zambito testified against Vaillancourt, claiming that he openly received bribes on the contracts handed out in Laval. Vaillancourt has clearly denied all the allegations so far.
