The Quebec corruption inquiry has already heard testimonials of police, construction bosses and bureaucrats in the extremely controversial and high-profile inquiry. Now it seems like this list of testimonials will grow up to include a suspected Mafia boss as well.

The lawyer of a renowned member of the Montreal Mafia is attempting to let his client be escape testifying before the inquiry. Presently, Raynald Desjardins awaits the trial of first-degree murder charges of a former Bonanno crime boss. Desjardin’s lawyer, Marc Labelle, stated to the inquiry that his client is currently awaiting the trial, so testifying before the inquiry is likely to obstruct his attempt of finding an impartial jury. A lawyer representing the inquiry says it’s interested in Desjardins’ involvement in a construction firm that specialized in decontamination.

Perhaps Labelle has noted that Desjardins’ previously attempt of having a subpoena nullified before the Quebec Superior Court fail drastically. Furthermore that attempt highlighted the inquiry in tremendous media coverage and now he understands that his testimony will give the inquiry even more attention. The lawyer requested the commission counsel for making sure that it is totally essential for Desjardins to testify, and even in that case, it shall be guaranteed that his testimony will be taken completely behind closed doors under a publication ban.

A commission council member, Simon Tremblay, stated that Desjardins’ request is pretty premature; as he pointed out that the date of his murder trial has not even been set yet. Furthermore, the head of the inquiry commission, France Charbonneau claims that she’ll deliberate on the request.
