With holiday shopping gearing up, the Hamilton Police Service provides the following shopping safety tips:

• While parking be aware of your surrounding during daylight hours.  At night, park in a well lit area and be alert while attending your vehicle.

• Lock your packages and gifts in your vehicle’s trunk. Keep your vehicle doors locked and windows closed. If your vehicle has a security shade, utilize it.

• Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay for purchases with a cheque, credit card, or debit card when possible.  Always protect your PIN number when making purchases.

• Consolidate your packages to avoid making several trips to your vehicle to secure merchandise, as people maybe watching you.

• To discourage purse-snatchers, wear your purse across your body. Keep your wallet in an inside jacket pocket, not a back trouser pocket.

• Teach children to go to a store clerk or security guard and ask for help if you become separated. They should never go into a parking lot alone.
