Elections Canada Begins Massive Investigation of Complaints from 56 ridings

Recently acquired court documents narrated that Elections Canada investigators are inspecting complaints of misleading or harassing phone calls from a total of 56 ridings all from the time of 2011 federal election campaign. These 56 ridings constitute of almost one-fifth of Canada’s 308 ridings in total.

The documents revealed precisely how extensive the investigation has become since the first revelation about that the election agency’s initial investigation into the allegations of few misleading phone calls in Guelph, Ont. The documents, referred as information to obtain a production order, specifically encompass records of phone calls to the customers of Vidéotron in Quebec and Shaw in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and Ontario. A production order of Rogers is not, however, publicly released yet.

The investigator of Elections Canada, John Dickson, narrated that the Shaw production order is believed to provide information which is going to help identify whoever made these calls. He also shed some light on the fact that the agency has received a total of 99 complaints of misleading or harassing calls before the first media report was filed last February. And after the news was out in the open, the agency received additional 1,048 complaints, excluding the 252 complaints from Guelph. He added that some of these complaints reported both misleading and harassing calls.

New Democrat MP Craig Scott asserted in the House of Commons on Friday, that the incident of Guelph is “clearly not an isolated incident” and “Conservatives can no longer pretend that this is just a few rogues in Guelph.”
