Today, the Ottawa Police Service Street Crime Unit concludes Project “Woody”, a project targeting the street level trafficking of illicit drugs in the lower town area of Ottawa.

The Street Crime Unit, in collaboration with Neighborhood officers, Patrol Officers and the new Beat/Demo Team, began Project “Woody” in January of this year. The goal of the project was to choke off street level trafficking, thus diminishing the supply of drugs, and encourage referrals to addiction support agencies.

The initiative was concentrated in the lower town area primarily due to the high convergence of pedestrian volume associated with multiple restaurants, bars, tourist attractions, businesses and places of employment situated throughout.

“Over the past five months, 84 street level traffickers of different age, race, gender and socio-economic status, have been identified for arrest through a wide variety of investigative techniques,” noted Acting Inspector Mike Ryan, District Support. “A total of 322 charges have been culminated against these individuals thus far and this number is expected to rise following arrests which will be made this afternoon.”

In addition, $68,000 in illicit drugs and $9,500 in cash associated to proceeds of crime have been seized in the investigation.

Project “Woody” is the third major project conducted by the Street Crime Unit within the last 18 months. Today’s wrap up was preceded by project “Crackdown” in May 2009 and Project “Crackdown 2” in October 2009.

The Ottawa Police Street Crime Unit was formed in 2007 as a Pilot Project by Chief Vern White, to combat Street Level Drug Issues in the downtown core. The Unit was made permanent in April 2009 through the Strategic Growth Initiative at the Ottawa police.

The Street Crime Unit works full-time throughout the City of Ottawa, but their main focus remains on the Drug Issues in the downtown core. They are a covert unit that utilizes many different facets of investigative techniques to combat street level drug trafficking.
