Steven Chabot, one of three top-ranked Quebec provincial police officers put under investigation in dispute of misusing public funds, claims to have learned about the incident from media sources. The former director of investigations for the Sûreté du Québec, Steven Chabot, toke a stance of innocence alleging that he was done nothing wrong, while asserting suspicion on the fact that details of the investigation were made public so soon.
Chabot stated during an interview that “I was an investigator for 30 years. I’ve never seen an allegation go public like this before an investigation is complete. It’s a weird way of doing business.” The investigation was initiated in result of a routine accountability of the books carried out on Mario Laprise’s arrival to the provincial police, which showed the money being unaccounted for. Laprise allegedly informed the Public Security Minister Stéphane Bergeron and the investigation was called.
Chabot had retired from the service in 2010, but all the suspects including him were put on paid leave before commencing the investigation. Bergeron asserts that the questioned funds were explicitly set up to pay police informants or cost of drugs in undercover operations. He informed that a high-ranking officer approved the use of money for paying someone’s retirement bonus. Bergeron would not name the individual who benefited from that bonus. Chabot intends to hire a lawyer and actively defend himself. He admitted that the investigation has left him in a difficult place personally, alleging “what can you say? I’ve got a life, I’ve got a family … I’m devastated.”
