An operator of a dog rescue firm, who has been accused of strangling a dog to death at a Toronto animal shelter, has finally surrendered herself voluntarily. 50-years-old Rita Mueller, from Bolton, Ont., gave herself in the custody of Toronto police on Friday morning. she is allegedly charged with killing or injuring an animal other than cattle, causing or permitting pain or injury or suffering to an animal or bird and disobeying a court order.

Police claims that the dog, a Shar-Pei, was removed from her care, after which Mueller was obligated to return the dog to a new owner, for which she came to a Toronto Animal Services shelter in August. While her visit at the shelter, she was equipped with a leash and a mask for the dog to get the pet ready, but she instead brutally hanged the animal with the provided leash during the short time she spent in the shelter’s quarantine room. The dog was allegedly brought in the quarantine room of the animal shelter because it supposedly bit someone.

According to the initial investigation report, Mueller immediately escaped the crime scene after killing the dog, while the shelter staff later discovered the dead dog without vital signs. Records show that an autopsy was conducted on the body, which confirmed the cause of death to be choking. During the investigating, Police discovered that Mueller operates a Scooby’s Dog House and Rescue, though the organization might be closed now but the investigators still fear that she might be harmful to other animals she may own.
