An announcement from the office of International Cooperation Minister, Julian Fantino, made on Friday declares that Canada is temporarily suspending its aid to Haiti due to fear of mismanagement of funds in the Caribbean nation. Fantino alleged that several million dollars “have been frozen for the moment,” while giving an interview to a local newspaper.

He elaborated that only few of the already established aid programs are going to be maintained, but there would be no new money flow until better management of funds is assured by the management.  It has been almost three years since the island suffered from one of the most devastating earthquakes of all times, which killed more than 200,000 people. Ottawa was among the very first nations to offer $390 million in aid for reconstruction of Haiti, which made Canada the most prominent donor nation to Haiti.

Fantino previously toured Haiti in November for evaluating the situation on-ground, where he admittedly said that the country “is still in very bad shape.” He showed regret for lack of progress in the area of reconstruction, where he blamed poor management to be responsible. He further added during his interview, saying “are we going to continue doing things the same way in Haiti? I don’t think so. Because we’re not seeing the kind of progress that Canadians should expect.” Fantino mentioned that “will we have to continue dealing with Haiti’s problems forever? They too have to step up.” The Canadian International Development Agency claims that it will continue offering emergency help “should humanitarian crises arise.”
