Premier Greg Selinger recognized the outstanding leadership of 10 Grade 12 students from schools across the province by presenting them each with a Premier’s Healthy Living Award for Youth at a ceremony today at the Legislative Building.

"The efforts and accomplishments of these young people are truly inspiring," said Selinger.  "From coaching sports to organizing a health and wellness conference, they are setting an example for all of us while making life better for themselves and others. I congratulate each of them and encourage them to keep up the great work."

The Premier’s Healthy Living Award for Youth recognizes the achievements of young Manitobans who serve as positive role models for other children and youth.  Award recipients are chosen for the outstanding healthy-living contributions they have made to their communities in areas such as active living, healthy eating, and the prevention of injuries, illness and the use of tobacco.

The Premier’s Healthy Living Award for Youth fulfils one of the recommendations of the Healthy Kids, Healthy Futures Task Force.

The Premier’s Healthy Living Award for Youth is part of the Manitoba Youth Leadership Scholarship Program.  This program recognizes Grade 12 students who have engaged in meaningful leadership and volunteer citizenship activities during the past year targeted at promoting healthy living in their communities and schools. Scholarship applicants are automatically considered for the Premier’s Healthy Living Award. This year, 156 students will receive $500 scholarships toward their post-secondary education. To date, 660 scholarships have now been awarded.
