A city committee forwarded a request for making multiple amendments to the City of Winnipeg’s 2013 budget in light of the recent public outcry over funding cuts in the original budget. The executive policy committee of Winnipeg made an announcement on Wednesday, declaring that several changes are being proposed for amending the current operating budget, i.e. already approved by the city council, including cash for Sherbrook Pool and smaller cuts on museums.

The proposal still upholds the funding cuts in grants of all Museums, but not as much as originally decided in the preliminary budget. The original budget of 2013 suggests a funding cut of 10 per cent for city museums and heritage programs, which consequently leaves the institutions with a shortfall of almost $140,000. In response to the announcement funding cuts of 10 per cent, all local museums initiated a collaborated campaign for preserving their funding, while some of them threatened to start layoffs, cut programs and admission hikes in case the funding was decreased. The Manitoba Children’s Museum initiated an online petition in protest of the proposed funding cuts.

Consequently, now the EPC is recommending a part of those cuts, i.e. $56,147, to be annulled, while also suggesting that the Fire Fighters Museum shall be funded by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service instead of the Fire Fighter Historical Society. The new recommendations suggested that Sherbrook Pool should receive $200,000 from the Mayor’s civic initiatives fund. A local community group spoke out about the need for the pool to be reopened after its sudden closure.
