The Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, clarified his stance on helping France with its military mission in Mali today, as he alleged that Canada is indeed considering to whether and how to broaden its help for Mali, but would want a “broad consensus” before lending a hand.

Previously, Canada has already supplied a C-17 Globemaster for one week to aid in transportation of equipment and troops, which is helping in France’s attempt of shutting down an al-Qaeda-linked insurgency, which Harper says views “as a very important anti-terrorist mission.” This time-limited help might be extended in short time, as Harper awaits a consensus with the government’s opposition in the House of Commons. Harper was announcing federal funding for an auto-industry project in Cambridge, Ont., when he alleged that “I’m obviously talking to my colleagues, and we’re also in consultation with the opposition parties.” He added that “anything we do, I’d like to see a broad Canadian consensus behind that. I do think it is important to help this mission. At the same time, I think we’ve been very clear, and I think this reflects Canadian opinion that, while we’re prepared to help, we don’t want to see a direct Canadian military mission to Mali.”

Summing up his view, Harper declared “so we will continue to look at ways we can be helpful with a broad consensus in Parliament.” The recent help of providing a transport plane for only one week will end on Thursday. So far the C-17 was being used as a daily shuttle to deliver heavy equipment to Mali’s capital, Bamako, from a military base in southern France.
