Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, has made an official announcement of appointing Denise Batter, from Regina, to the Senate on Friday. Among other six senators of Saskatchewan, David Tkachuk is the only male member, while Batters will be the another female member to the list including Raynell Andreychuk, Lillian Dyck, Pana Merchant and Pamela Wallin.

Batters currently works as an executive director of regulatory affairs at the Crown Investments Corporation (CIC). When inquired about the appointment, she alleged that I’m thrilled with the appointment, saying that “I’m so proud and honoured and I am so thankful to the prime minister for giving me this amazing opportunity to serve my province and my country.” She was asked her opinion on the majority of Saskatchewan women holding Senate seats, Batters mentioned that “I think that’s really great. And I see two of the five appointed today were women as well.”

Batters have received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Regina and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Saskatchewan. She was admitted to the Saskatchewan Bar in 1995, and was in private practice in Saskatchewan until 2007. She has previously worked as chief of staff to Saskatchewan’s Minister of Justice, Don Morgan, who asserted that “her history is such that she will understand well the nuances of the relationship between the province and the federal government.” He added that “I think she will be a great advocate for Saskatchewan and she will be a hardworking and competent senator. I think people will know her best because of the work she has done on mental health issues.”
