In addition to the usual visual inspections, green insect traps baited with a lure will be used as part of this year’s EAB survey across Canada. These surveys target trees in the surrounding areas where the EAB has been detected. In addition, in areas where EAB has not been found, surveys are also being conducted at sawmills and other facilities that handle or transport wood, because they are considered at high risk for the introduction of the pest.
EAB is a highly destructive insect that attacks and kills ash trees. This invasive species poses a major economic and environmental threat to urban and forested areas. The CFIA is committed to protecting Canadian plants from serious pests. Part of its responsibility involves annual surveillance to detect and monitor pests present in Canada.
