The relatively small town of L’Épiphanie, Quebec, is starting to mourn over the painful deaths of its two workers, whose dead bodies were recently recovered on Saturday after they were killed in last week’s landslide in a quarry near Montreal. The mayor of town with 3,300 residents located north-east of Montreal, Denis Lévesque, mentioned that “we are experiencing relief, but also a great deal of sadness.”
Mayor Lévesque explained that “this has been a difficult and stressful week for all of us here, especially for the families of the victims. We can now begin to grieve those whose lives were taken by this tragic accident. But this is a close-knit community. We’ll pull through together.” Relevant authorities are currently investigating whether the dreadful event was a result of negligence or of natural causes. Investigators will also be ordering autopsies on the bodies of 54-years-old Daniel Brisebois, from L’Épiphanie, and 43-yeras-old Marie-Claude Laporte, from Bois-des-Filion. Both these bodes were discovered from underneath deep rubble near trucks they were operating when the landslide occurred.
It took almost four days of rescue efforts, which was often disadvantaged to extreme weather conditions and risk of another landslide. The bodies were finally recovered by the search teams on Saturday. The spokesperson of Quebec provincial police, Benoît Richard, stated that “the entire site had been squared off into several quadrangles and assigned to search teams.” He added that “the body of Mr. Brisebois was found twenty minutes after the digging began. The second body, of a woman, was found six hours later.”
