It has been explained in a correctional statement that Canadian drivers visiting Florida will not be required to possess a special driving permit as previously announced by the authorities, even though a new law discretely put into effect on New Year’s Day dictates to do so.
The official statement released on Thursday afternoon by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, declared that the agency’s recently implemented law asking all foreign visitors to acquire an International Driving Permit for driving in the state may violate an international law. The statement mentions that “it has come to the department’s attention that this requirement may violate the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic.” Additionally, it said “therefore, the Florida Highway Patrol will defer enforcement of violations of the amended statutory section until a final determination of the alignment of the amendment with the treaty can be made.” The CAA recently began alerting motorists regarding the change as it approached Florida state lawmakers for excluding Canadians from the rule, i.e. formed to include all non-U.S. residents. It was highlighted that almost more than millions of Canadians visit Florida each year.
The spokesperson of CAA, Ian Jack, explained that Florida had passed the law for avoiding its law enforcement officials to have encountered driver’s licence documents in languages they could not read. He admitted that “they recognize they made a mistake in this law,” and “what it was intended to do was to deal with non-English language licenses that their law enforcement officials might have difficulty deciphering … but they forgot to write an exemption for English-speaking people into the law.”
