Almost a day after it was speculated that the province and Alberta’s teachers have settled on a tentative agreement, it was officially confirmed by both Alberta’s premier and the Alberta Teacher’s Association that a deal has indeed been reached. It was elaborated by the province that the agreement is settled for the next four years, as teachers agree to a salary freeze for the first three, after which the province has agreed to an increase of two percent in 2015, along with a one-time lump sum payment that same year. The agreement is so far recommended by the ATA, however, the teachers are yet to vote on it.

This agreement has been signed almost after two or more years of negotiations between both sides, as teachers’ maintained that wages and workload issues are paramount. It was publicly announced in a joint press release on Friday morning, by the Premier Alison Redford and the ATA president, that they are pleased that both sides were able to come to an agreement “that puts students first”. ATA President, Carol Henderson, alleged that “this agreement provides valuable stability in Education, for students and for teachers, over the next four years.” She elucidated that “it contains important elements to help provide teachers with more to focus on improving student learning.”

Apart from the four-year salary deal, the province claims that it is eager to conduct a review into the teachers’ workload, whereas Alberta Education also intends to conduct an internal review and a study from a third party, for finding out how workloads can be altered to improve the classroom.
