RCMP Confirms Involvement of Canadians in Algerian Gas Plant Assault

The RCMP made a general confirmation on Monday, admitting that Canadian’s were involved in the terrorist attack at an Algerian gas plant in January. It was revealed that the remains of Canadians have been confirmed on ground at the crime scene in Algeria. It was also established that the body was linked to the hostage situation arisen in January at a gas plant between Algerian forces and Islamic insurgents with links to al-Qaeda.

The RCMP emphasized that the investigation is still incomplete, and no more information can be released to public as yet. The body was discovered at the site of the gas plant, where Algerian special forces targeted Islamic insurgents, who had taken the control of the premises at Saharan plant and held hundreds hostages for four days. The hostage situation was dissolved on Jan. 16 when Algerian forces held a targeted operation on the suspects resulting in a clash causing at least 81 lives, among which at least 48 were hostages. A so-called group, the Masked Brigade, took responsibility for leading the gas plant attack and taking hostages. The group alleged to be taking revenge of the French attacks on Islamic insurgents in Mali.

The Prime Minister of Algeria, Abdelmalek Sellal, mentioend in a press conference that the group of insurgents included two Canadians, along with fighters from Egypt, Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Tunisia. Sellal shared that the insurgents who attacked the gas plant were fully prepared, and had memorized the layout of the sprawling complex, and ready to blow up the entire facility.
