A lawyer of the Toronto District School Board has confirmed that a teacher at a Scarborough elementary school has been charged with 42 offences in connection with a sexual assault investigation prompted by complaints of more than two dozen students. 53-years-old Christian Kpodjie will now face numerous charges including 16 counts of sexual assault, 12 counts of sexual exploitation, and 14 counts of assault. He turned himself in to police on Wednesday.

The legal counsel of Toronto District School Board, Grant Bowers, revealed during a press conference on Thursday morning, that Kpodjie has previously worked at a total of five Toronto schools since 2007, whereas he was currently teaching French to Grade 4, 5 and 6 students at Inglewood Heights Junior Public School in Scarborough. Bowers informed that “this is the first allegations we’ve received.” He additionally elucidated that previously Kpodjie worked at Gateway PS last year, while he worked at Chester Le in 2010, at Derrydown PS in 2009, and at Humberwood Downs Junior Middle Academy in 2008.

However, Bowers confirmed that so far all the allegations laid against him all stem from Inglewood. He stated that “my understanding at the moment, is that they all involve Inglewood – period,” and “beyond that, we have no knowledge.” The senior manager of professional support services at TDSB, David Johnston, confirmed that a crisis response team has been made available at Inglewood since Wednesday for providing counselling support to students, staff and alleged victims, and “will continue to be there as long as needed.”
