The Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada, John Baird, has decided to spend almost all of his Parliament’s two-week Easter break in the Middle East, as he intends to leave tonight on a tour that will put him on a complete variety of difficult files, including Canada’s funding to assist the Palestinian Authority to the resettlement of Syrian refugees.

Answering queries at a question period on Thursday, Baird informed reporters that the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Syria and security concerns with Iran are on top of his agenda for the trip. He further elucidated that his tour will start from Jordan, and move on with short trips to the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain in its early days. Moreover, he plans to visit Cyprus afterwards, where he is scheduled to attend a meeting with the financially-troubled country’s foreign minister and participate in a memorial service. Last but not the least, the highest priority destination of the trip will be the meetings in Israel and the West Bank with leaders on both sides of the newly-resurrected peace process. Baird alleged that “I look forward to constructive dialogue with all of them.”

Canada has openly opposed Palestinians’ successful effort in Novemberto win elevated status at the UN, and warned them of using it to file an international legal complaint against Israel. Baird informed reporters that “we obviously had a fundamental difference of opinion with the Palestinian authority,” however, “I think they know our views well. But I think it’s tremendously important in my responsibilities to engage in dialogue.”
