The Ontario’s legislature approved a motion on Thursday essentially extending the slots-at-racetracks program from the closing deadline of Sunday deadline and also asking to require referendums in order to build new casinos in the province. The motion was introduced by a New Democratic Party member of provincial parliament, Taras Natyshak, and received majority support of the NDP and Progressive Conservatives through a 53-33 vote. Even though the motion is not binding on the ruling Liberal government, it still makes the opposition’s position it on the province’s gaming policy.

It was recently requested by The Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association, OHRIA, that Premier Kathleen Wynne’s government should definitely “accept the will of the majority of MPPs and immediately work with opposition parties, our industry, and other stakeholders.” Chair of the organization, Sue Leslie, alleged that “OHRIA is calling on Premier Wynne to restore [the slots-at-racetracks program] through 2013, while horse racing is integrated into a new revenue-sharing arrangement.” Furthermore, she added that “the industry needs to know the financial commitment for the long term immediately, so breeders and horsemen can confidently invest today given the five-year investment needed to breed and own racehorses.”

It was previously announced by Wynne that the horse racing is going to be integrated into the province’s gaming strategy, along with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. Keeping in mind, that last year The Ontario lottery declared that it was terminating the slots-at-racetracks program, under which the racetracks and the horsemen each received 10 percent of the proceeds with the hosting municipalities acquiring smaller share while the rest was pocketed by the province.
