Hamilton Police investigate the City’s 10th traffic fatality.

On Monday June 21st, 2010 at 3:15 p.m., a motor vehicle collision occurred on Upper James St., south of Twenty Rd., Hamilton that claimed the life of a four year old boy from Hamilton.

The Hamilton Police Service Collision Reconstruction Unit was called to investigate and investigators have determined that a northbound commercial delivery truck was stopped on Upper James St. to make a left turn into a private driveway. Two passenger cars were behind the delivery truck and the drivers of those vehicles were slowing or had also come to a stop on Upper James St. A full size School Bus was northbound on Upper James St., approaching the stopped / slowing vehicles ahead. The driver of the school bus was unable to stop for the vehicles ahead and rear ended a Saturn motor vehicle. The impact caused a chain reaction collision by forcing the Saturn into the rear of a Toyota motor vehicle, then forcing the Toyota into the rear of the delivery van.

The 32 year old female driver and two child rear passengers from the Saturn were taken to hospital by ambulance with serious injuries. They are all from the same family and reside in Hamilton. The four year old male was pronounced dead at hospital approximately one hour after the collision. The family has been notified and is notifying other family members. His mother and infant sibling remain in the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The male driver of the Toyota and his adult female passenger were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They are expected to be released from the hospital later today. They are both from Hamilton.

The male driver of the delivery van was taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. He is also expected to be released from the hospital today. He is also from Hamilton.

The female driver of the School Bus did not require emergency medical assistance. She is from Cayuga. As part of the investigation, the bus will be examined by a mechanic for any defects.

The location where the collision occurred has a posted speed limit of 70 km/h. Hamilton Police do not believe that speed in excess of the posted speed limit is a factor. Alcohol is not a factor. All occupants of the involved motor vehicles were wearing seatbelts, including the two children who were properly belted in child seats. There were no passengers on the school bus at the time of this collision.
