The BC Ferries have made the announcement of cancelling its two sailings for the day, in light of a recent accident when a woman fell off a ferry though she was quickly rescued from the water near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal. Among the sailings cancelled was the 11 a.m. sailing from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen and the 1 p.m. sailing from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay.
A representative of the Victoria Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre, Paul Tasker, informed media sources that the centre was alerted about a person being overboard at around 8:30 a.m. The female passenger was on board the Spirit of Vancouver Island ferry, which was en route to Tsawwassen from Swartz Bay. Tasker explained that she was witnessed falling from the vessel by another fellow passenger, and that the ferry immediately stopped at the position to begin a man overboard operation.
A spokeswoman for BC Ferries, Deborah Marshall, explained that the BC Ferries staff rescued the woman from the icy water and she was quickly taken back on board the ferry. She explained that the incident took place near the terminal, hence the ship soon took her into the dock. The paramedics boarded the vessel and shifted the woman into a waiting ambulance, which took her to the nearby hospital. Marshall alleged that “we have procedures in place for man overboard and (staff) did a fabulous job.” Whereas, Tasker confirmed that “she’s alive, that’s all we know at this point, and was transferred to an ambulance at the dock.”
