The suspicious package that ended up shutting down the Lionel Groulx métro station and scrambling traffic at the busy hub has been successfully blown up. The métro service completely resumed service, along with stops at the busy transfer, at 11:05 a.m. The package was destroyed by a police robot at around 10:30 a.m. and Atwater Ave, which had been closed for general traffic, revived at 11:10 a.m.

The suspicious package was reported outside the station by a citizen at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday. Consequently, station on Atwater Ave. was quickly evacuated soon after 7:30 a.m., while the police directed the Société de Transport de Montréal to keep running the métros through the station without stopping. Even though, neither green nor orange lines interrupted in service, both trains were restrained from making a stop at Lionel Groulx. The police had set up security perimeter around the station, which caused hurdle for traffic on Atwater all the way to the closed Ville Marie exit. The buses that usually dropped passengers on St. Jacques St., or outside the Atwater entrance, diverted to leave passengers at the corner of Delisle St. and Atwater.

The remote-controlled robot of bomb squad advanced at the package, which lay on a grassy, vacant lot along St. Jacques St., while people filmed the action on cellphone cameras and iPads. One of those evacuated, Stéphane Demers, alleged that “this is weird, just really surreal but I kind of feel like people are overreacting,” asserting that “it feels like people see suspicious things everywhere after tragic events like Boston.”
