The Premiere of Newfoundland and Labrador, Kathy Dunderdale, has deactivated her Twitter account because it apparently implied associations that were, according to her office, inappropriate or vulgar. Dunderdale alleged she was extremely troubled to have found out about her account being associated with the websites.

The use of social media by high profile politicians was brought into highlight at the house this week, when a New Democrat, Gerry Rogers, was temporarily suspended from the legislature after the Progressive Conservatives alleged that her account was member of a Facebook group where an alleged death threat against Dunderdale was posted. Whereas, Gerry Rogers explained that she was added to the group without her knowledge and denied to apologize in the house on Tuesday. Consequently, the government reported the threats against Dunderdale to police.

Dunderdale mentioned in a statement that all members of the legislature shall maintain a higher standard on social media. The official statement from her office, says that “I was dismayed to discover that my Twitter account was in any way associated with inappropriate websites.” She added that “no one from any group or political party should align themselves with these types of comments. As soon as it was brought to my attention, I immediately took action to remove this disturbing association.” The alleged inappropriate or vulgar associations that may have existed on Dunderdale’s Twitter account are no longer visible because her account has been deactivated. A news release from Dunderdale’s office describes them as “promoting inappropriate or vulgar actions.”
