Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne portrayed that she was not involved in the Liberal government’s highly controversial judgment of cancelling the gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga. Wynne explained that even though she was Liberal campaign co-chair in 2011, she only heard about the decision of cancelling the Mississauga plant few days before the election through the media.

Wynne was testifying under oath at the legislature’s justice committee on Tuesday afternoon, when she confessed of having signed a cabinet document that allowed negotiations to proceed on the Oakville plant, however, she added that it was eight months after the project already was cancelled in 2010. Previously on the same day, the CEO of the Ontario Power Authority, Colin Andersen, made a huge declaration by informing the committee that cancellation of the Oakville gas plant has cost as much as $310 million, which is even more than seven times the original cost estimate of $40 million. In her testimony, Wynne elucidated that the cost estimates from the energy ministry kept on changing and were too complex to calculate. She stated that “we didn’t get the full story and the people of Ontario didn’t get the full story.” Wynne suggested “we shouldn’t be in this situation. We need to have a better process.”

The committee is set to investigate the government’s decisions of cancelling two gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga. In reference to why the authority previously estimated the cost of the Mississauga plant relocation at $190 million, Andersen stated that “these are complicated numbers to explain.”
