York Police has confirmed that an explosion at a plant in Newmarket left nine people injured, while six of them had to be taken to a nearby hospital with minor non-life-threatening injuries. According to the York Regional Police, the explosion took place Wednesday morning at a plant on Newpark Boulevard in an industrial area of the city.

It was explained that the explosion took place on a manufacturing line at the Dortec Industries plant, i.e. a division of Magna International Inc., which is North America’s largest auto-parts maker. Magna added that the employees were quickly shifted to the hospital for “further evaluation,” though none of them seemed to be in life-threatening condition. Police revealed that they were called in due to the fire at 9:20 a.m. on Wednesday, while a team reached the scene at 9:32 a.m. It was confirmed by Const. Blair McQuillan that there was a “small explosion” at the site, which resulted in minor fire and minor smoke damage.

McQuillan added that the Ontario Ministry of Labour was on scene Wednesday afternoon. She explained that “the roads in the area have opened, the plant is closed and then they’re just waiting for the Ontario fire marshal to arrive.” York Regional Police, the Ontario Ministry of Labour and the Ontario fire marshal are all to be involved in the investigation into the cause of the explosion. Meanwhile the almost 200 employees of the factory have been evacuated and will not be allowed to re-enter the premises until the investigators complete the evaluation of the scene.
