The Calgary police bomb squad has begun the scrutiny of Old City Hall premises after a suspicious package was reportedly found outside the building on Friday morning. Police has confirmed that the building has been evacuated, though the municipal building has not. The central library has also been evacuated. The suspicious packaged was discovered at 7:40 a.m. and Old City Hall was surrounded by police officials while the traffic was also limited in the area.

Marilyn Phillips works on the third floor of Old City Hall, she stood behind the police security tape staring at the building at 9 this morning. She reported that one of her colleagues ran into the office at 7:50 a.m. and alleged to have heard that a woman saw someone run up the stairs and throw a black duffel bag in and then ran away. Phillips stated that I grabbed my coat and ran outside, alleging that “I’m scared and pissed off.” Phillips mentioned that “in light of what happened at the courthouse I don’t think security was handled well.” No one told her office to evacuate, she said.

John Mar was participating in the municipal bike-to-work day, and was unable to pass the police barricade at Macleod Trail and 7th Avenue S.E. He alleged that “this is a sign of the times” to be “better to be safe than sorry.” Even though he was obstructed to get past City Hall office, Mar alleged that technology will help him have a productive morning. “We’re very mobile,” said Mar, wearing a Union Jack bike helmet. “I’ve got my iPad with me.”
