The authorities in the U.S. have unsealed files of another arrest in connection to the alleged plot to derail a Toronto-to-New York passenger train. The charges were publicly shared by the FBI on Thursday, as it mentioned to have charged Tunisia-born Ahmed Abassi of fraudulently applying for a work visa in order to remain in the United States “to facilitate an act of international terrorism.”

The U.S. attorney, Preet Bharara, mentioned in an official statement from the U.S. Department of Justice, that “as alleged, Ahmed Abassi had an evil purpose for seeking to remain in the United States — to commit acts of terror and develop a network of terrorists here, and to use this country as a base to support the efforts of terrorists internationally.” Abassi previously resided in Canada, but was recently arrested on April 22 though it was not disclosed until Thursday. Authorities claim that Abassi entered the United States in March to “pursue terrorist activity and support others in the same shameful pursuit.” Bharara stated that “what Mr. Abassi didn’t know was that one of his associates, privy to the details of his plan, was an undercover FBI agent. The FBI and its Joint Terrorism Task Force partners will continue working tirelessly to protect the country from those who seek to do us harm.”

It was revealed that Abassi met with Esseghaier in New York City, who was “previously radicalized by Abassi.” Reports show that Abassi had “discussed his desire to engage in terrorist acts against targets in the United States and other countries, and his intention to provide support and funding to organizations engaged in terrorist activity.”
