Senator Pamela Wallin has made an important announcement, declaring her decision to step down from the Conservative caucus while her travel expense remains under scrutiny by a senate committee. A former journalist representing Saskatchewan in the Senate, Wallin, has reportedly claimed about $321,000 in travel expenses since September 2010 that are the subject of an audit by an outside firm.
In an official statement released only a day after Sen. Duffy’s announcement to resign from Conservative Caucus, Wallin stated “I have been involved in the external audit process since December 2012 and I have been co-operating fully and willingly with the auditors.” She added that “I have met with the auditors, answered all the questions and provided all requested documentation. I had anticipated that the audit process would be complete by now, but given that it continues, I have decided to recuse myself from the Conservative caucus and I will have no further comment until the audit process is complete.”
The government leader in the Senate, Marjory Lebreton, confirmed the news of Wallin’s resignation from the caucus and alleged that she will now sit as an Independent senator. Whereas on the other hand, chair of the senate’s internal economy committee, Senator David Tkachuk, refused to discuss the progress of the audit, but discussed Wallin’s situation by saying that “I’m very sorry she has left caucus.” Tkachuk mentioned on Friday that “I haven’t talked to her yet … It seems to me she wanted to have time for herself and deal with the issues in front of her. When they’re dealt with, I’m sure that if all goes well she’ll be welcomed back.”
